We are looking for a Medical Lab Technician (MLT) generalist in the areas of Blood Banking, Microbiology setup, Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, for work on 2nd shift. Must be true Generalist.

Job Location: Topeka, KS

(Some relocation assistance available)

You will support patient care by procuring and processing specimens, performing clinical laboratory procedures and evaluating results. Enhance laboratory quality by participating in process improvement and maintaining professional competency. The position supports the Laboratory Department and reports to the Laboratory Supervisor.

You will analyze samples of blood, tissue and body fluids to determine chemical content, cell count, drug levels or blood type; they may also search for specific microorganisms like bacteria or parasites. Assist in the process of preparing samples for examination, using automated equipment and specialized instrumentation. You will be performing numerous complicated tests simultaneously, and accurately interpreting the results.

Will maintain equipment and tools; perform quality assurance testing and routine calibration to ensure optimal performance. Established and created protocols and procedures must be maintained.

Current knowledge of clinical laboratory techniques and principles a must.


Familiarity or Expertise in the following preferred:

Sunquest LIS





Understand PCR testing

Proficient at Gram stain procedure

Grifols or ECCO

Job Duties:

The day-to-day duties include performing and assisting on the process of performing complex analysis of microscopic, immunologic, biologic, bacteriologic, hematologic, and chemical tests and their results. Possible tasks include:

  • Preparing cultures of tissue samples
  • Establishing and monitoring programs that ensure data accuracy
  • Microscopically examining slides of bodily fluids
  • Cross-matching blood for transfusions
  • Chemically analyzing blood or urine for toxic components
  • Analyzing lab reports for accuracy
  • Operating and calibrating equipment
  • Delivering test results to physicians, researchers or patients
  • Collecting and studying blood samples to determine morphology

Education / Certifications:

Preferred: 2yr Degree

Minimum: High School / GED and at least 60 semester secondary education hours, including 6 hours of biology and 6 hours of chemistry at a minimum.

Licensed by the American Society of Clinical Pathology or equivalent as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

Registered by the ASCP within 6 months of employment into this position


Current knowledge of clinical laboratory techniques and principles.

Knowledge of performance improvement, quality control, equipment maintenance, laboratory safety.

2nd Shift. Full time.

Must be willing to occasionally cover a 3rd shift.

Willing to work weekends and holidays.

Will not be required to be on-call.

2+ years professional experience preferred.

All potential hires subject to Drug Screen.
